7 Points to Watch When Buying a Steel Hall

Structural design, steel quality, corrosion, panels, foundation, installation and warranty: a guide to comparing quotes.

A steel hall is a fast and economical solution for businesses that need a warehouse, workshop or store. But the cheapest quote is not always the right one. When comparing quotes, look at the following seven points.

1. Structural design and load calculation

Have wind, snow and seismic loads of the hall's location been taken into account? A roof calculated inadequately in a snow region can collapse in the first winter. The quote should include the structural calculation report and signed design drawings.

2. Steel quality and sections

The steel grade S235, S275 or S355 and the wall thickness of the profiles should be written in the quote. Lowering the price by using thinner profiles is a common method, so compare total steel weight (kg/m²).

3. Corrosion protection

Ask for hot-dip galvanising or at least a two-coat epoxy primer and topcoat paint system; in coastal regions the protection class should be raised.

4. Roof and facade panels

Panel thickness (40 – 100 mm), core (rock wool or PIR) and fire class determine insulation performance. Cold stores, livestock and food buildings need special panels.

5. Foundation and floor

Is the foundation work included in the quote? Fixed-price foundation quotes given without a ground survey are risky. For industrial floors, thickness, reinforcement and surface flatness should be stated.

6. Installation, delivery and schedule

Who will do the installation, crane and scaffolding costs and the delay penalty should be in writing. Visiting reference projects shows how well the company keeps its commitments.

7. Warranty and documents

Ask for the EN 1090 fabrication conformity certificate, material certificates and at least a 10-year load-bearing system warranty. Ask whether design support is provided during the permit and occupancy process.

This article is general information; with the price calculator and project quote form on our site you can see your preliminary cost and compare your quotes.

Suggested quote comparison table

Compare quotes in a single table: steel weight (tonnes), steel grade, paint system, panel thickness, number of doors and windows, whether the foundation is included, whether delivery and installation are included, delivery time, payment plan and warranty period. The empty cells in this table show the real reason for any price difference.

Reference visits

Visit at least two halls the company has delivered; ask the users about roof joints, door operation and floor flatness. A good manufacturer does not shy away from reference visits.
